Roommates.com offers users an ID verification option to build trust and increase match responses. To complete this level of verification, we partner with iDenfy, a secure third-party identity verification service.
Legal ID Verification is included free with any active VIP Membership. When you request to verify your ID, the information you submit is securely sent directly to iDenfy. They process this information through their automated systems to confirm your identity.
Since verification is handled entirely by iDenfy’s automated privacy protocols, Roommates.com does not store your private ID documents or biometric data on our servers. Each account is allowed up to two attempts to complete ID verification. Please double-check all details carefully before submitting.
How Identity Verification Works
iDenfy helps Roommates.com confirm your identity through three automated security checks:
Document Authentication: Captures clear images of the front and back of your official, unexpired government photo ID to ensure the document is authentic and unaltered.
Biometric Face Match: Uses biometric identifiers to compare photos of your face against the photo on your ID document to confirm ownership.
Database Validation: Validates your name, date of birth, and government ID details against global databases to confirm the information exists.
iDenfy asks for your explicit consent before collecting your information and uses your verification data strictly in accordance with their Privacy Policy.
Best Practices for a Successful Verification
To ensure your verification succeeds on your first attempt, follow these guidelines:
Use a Mobile Device: Smartphone cameras typically take higher-resolution photos than desktop webcams, leading to much higher success rates.
Use Original Documents: Submit an original, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Photocopies, digital photos of screens, or expired documents will fail automatically.
Ensure Proper Lighting: Find a well-lit room with ambient light. Avoid strong overhead lights that cast shadows or cause reflections and glares on your ID.
Avoid Obstructing Images: Place your ID flat on a dark surface and ensure no fingers or objects cover any part of the document. For the facial scan, remove hats, masks, or glasses.
Why am I asked to verify my identity?
ID verification is optional for standard accounts, but completing it adds an ID VERIFIED badge to your profile—significantly increasing response rates and establishing trust with potential matches.
If an account is flagged as high risk by our security filters, completing ID verification becomes mandatory to confirm the account's legitimacy and restore access.
Can I get verified using a different method?
All Roommates.com members have multiple routes to verify their account. Check out our Verifying Your Account article for more information.
Who has access to my verification data?
Both Roommates.com and iDenfy will have access to the information that you submit through the verification flow. We rely on iDenfy to help store your verification data. IDenfy uses access controls and security standards that are at least as stringent as those used to handle their own KYC and payments compliance data.
